Meet the artist

Doris Taussig

Born in 1950, artist Doris Taussig draws inspiration from observing people: their expressions, gestures, emotions and everyday behaviour. She transforms what she sees and feels into expressive, gender-neutral HappyTottii characters.

In 2016, a little enamel ladybug brought home from Hong Kong became part of the inspiration for an unexpected creative journey. Over time, HappyTottii developed into a world of original characters, artworks and licensing possibilities.

“HappyTottii is not just a cute little ladybug. HappyTottii is a metaphor. HappyTottii is us.”
An artist conversation

A Language Without Words

An edited conversation with Doris Taussig about observation, interpretation and the joy of making people smile.

What does “HappyTottii is us” mean to you?

HappyTottii is not just a cute little ladybug. HappyTottii is a metaphor. HappyTottii is us.

Was that philosophy there from the beginning?

No. It developed over time.

Where do your characters come from?

I observe people. Then I draw what I have seen and felt.

Some people say you have invented your own language. How do your characters communicate?

Without words.

Do viewers need to interpret a character the way you intended?

Not at all. I don't mind if someone feels something different. It's like a sentence: everyone can understand the same sentence differently.

Do you try to make every emotion positive?

No. I remain neutral.

How do people react when they see your characters?

They start to smile. I tell them it makes me happy when they smile, because that is what I want.

Your children have asked why you create these playful characters with so much love. What do you tell them?

It comes from above, and I don't know where it will end. I am only the one who brings it into being.
